Metaphor: ReFantazio - A Small Setting Mistake Can Ruin Your Game

The latest RPG from the creators of Persona, Atlus, is out now, featuring a thrilling fantasy world and a great story. While the game is generally straightforward, there’s one setting you should think twice about changing.

Watch Out for the Difficulty Setting!

At the start of the game, you’re asked to choose a difficulty level from five options:

  • Storyteller
  • Beginner
  • Normal
  • Hard
  • Conqueror (unlocked after one playthrough)

You can change the difficulty anytime during the game—except if you choose Storyteller mode. This mode is designed for players who only want to enjoy the story, with easier battles and no risk of dying. But once you select Storyteller mode, you’re stuck with it. You can’t switch back to a higher difficulty later.

So, if you’re 30 hours in and facing a tough boss, consider this before dropping to Storyteller mode. While it’s not a bad option, you’ll lose the challenge and strategic depth that make Metaphor: ReFantazio special.

We played the game on “Normal” and found it balanced and fair. Success comes from creating the right party and exploiting enemy weaknesses, but the game still allows for some small mistakes. If a fight gets too tough, you can temporarily switch to “Beginner” to progress faster. For hardcore fans of Shin Megami Tensei, “Hard” offers a serious challenge.

Have you tried Metaphor: ReFantazio yet? What do you think of the RPG?
