Metaphor: ReFantazio – 10 Tips We Wish We Knew Before Starting

Metaphor: ReFantazio can feel overwhelming, especially at the beginning. Here are some useful tips to help you start smoothly.

1. Be Careful When Choosing the Difficulty Level

At the start, you’ll choose from four difficulty levels:

  • Storyteller
  • Beginner
  • Normal
  • Hard

You can change the difficulty later, except for Storyteller mode. Once activated, it can’t be turned off, and in this mode, you can’t die. So, choose wisely if you want a real challenge.

2. Check the Memorandum Regularly

The game introduces a lot of characters, places, and lore that can be confusing. The Memorandum feature has brief explanations of everything you need to know, making it a handy reference.

3. Use Gallica’s Fairy Sight in Dungeons

When exploring dungeons, use Gallica’s fairy vision (L2 on PS5) to see enemies in different colors. This lets you know whether enemies are stronger, weaker, or equally matched. Avoid letting stronger enemies strike first, or you’ll be at a disadvantage in battle. It’s also helpful to stun enemies before they reach you.

4. You Can Escape from Battles

If you find yourself in a tough battle, press R2 (on PS5) to bring up a menu and try to escape. This doesn’t always work, but most of the time it will let you avoid unwanted fights.

5. Exploit Weaknesses Early in Battles

Targeting enemy weaknesses is key. If you hit an opponent’s weak point, you’ll earn half an action point, allowing you to take extra actions in that round. Press R1 at the start of a fight to switch to a character who can target those weaknesses. Passing on your turn only uses half an action point, so you can keep exploiting weaknesses effectively.

6. Level Up Hulkenberg as a Magician Knight

Early in the game, you’ll learn the magician archetype with Grius. After Grius leaves the party, Hulkenberg joins with the knight archetype. What you may not know is that to unlock the second level of the knight (magician knight), you need to level up both knight and magician. So, it’s a good idea to have Hulkenberg learn the magician archetype after Grius.

7. Buy Useful Detonators

The detonator shop in the capital seems unimportant at first, but it becomes useful after completing a side quest for the owner, Brigitta, outside the shop. Detonators let you cast spells without the corresponding archetype. For example, if you’re facing monsters weak to light, equip a character with a light detonator to exploit their weakness.

8. Level 1 Skills Can Be Inherited

In Metaphor, inheritance works similarly to Persona. You can transfer one or more skills between archetypes. Some archetypes have valuable skills at level 1, so it’s worth learning these for inheritance. For example, the magician archetype has the fire skill Bot, while the healer offers Hama.

9. Enter Every Building in New Cities

When you arrive in a new city, enter all buildings and shops to unlock fast travel for later. This saves you from having to walk around the city again later on.

10. You Can Return to Previous Locations

Although your movement is limited at first, you’ll unlock teleportation after reaching the second city. This allows you to revisit any place you’ve already been to, so don’t worry about completing everything before leaving the capital—you can come back later.

We hope these tips help you get started in Metaphor: ReFantazio! Have you started playing yet? Let us know your thoughts!
