1. Leave

Leave possibility
James leaves with Laura through the Silent Hill cemetery.

James leaves Silent Hill with Laura after the events at the cemetery. This is one of the more straightforward endings and can be unlocked on your first playthrough.

How to unlock:

  • Look at Mary’s letter in your inventory at least twice but don’t leave it in the closet near the hotel elevator.
  • Avoid looking at Angela’s knife in the inventory.
  • Keep James at good health throughout the game.
  • Don’t spend unnecessary time with Maria.
  • After defeating the two Pyramid Heads, listen to the entire monologue before continuing.

2. Maria

Maria
James parts ways with Mary on bad terms and leaves Silent Hill with Maria.

James leaves Silent Hill with a coughing Maria, though it hints at her ill health returning. This ending is also accessible on your first playthrough but requires more specific actions.

How to unlock:

  • Avoid looking at Mary’s letter, her photo, or Angela’s knife.
  • Spend at least 10 minutes with Maria, ensuring she remains unharmed.
  • Visit Maria while she is resting in the hospital and see her at least twice while she’s locked in her cell in the Labyrinth.
  • After fighting both Pyramid Heads, quickly leave without listening to Mary’s full monologue.

3. In the Water

In the Water
In this ending, James commits suicide by driving into the lake.

In this darker ending, James, overcome with guilt, drives his car into the lake, ending his life.

How to unlock:

  • Examine Angela’s knife in the inventory.
  • Do not look at Mary’s letter or her photo.
  • Keep James in low health for at least 10 minutes.
  • Inspect the writing above the jukebox in Neely’s Bar.
  • Read the document in the hospital’s rooftop shed.
  • Avoid spending too much time with Maria and let her get hurt.
  • After defeating both Pyramid Heads, listen to the full monologue.

4. Rebirth

Rebirth
James wants to resurrect Mary through a ritual.

This ending reveals James’s attempt to revive Mary using ritualistic objects linked to the town’s dark history. It can only be achieved in New Game Plus mode.

How to unlock: Collect four special items during New Game Plus:

  • Book: Blood Red Ceremony: Found in the cemetery after speaking to Angela for the first time.
  • Anointing Oil (White Chrism): Located at the Baldwins’ house on a table outside.
  • Obsidian Chalice: Found in a drawer at the Historical Society, near a painting of Pyramid Head.
  • Book: Lost Memories: Found in the Lost and Found office on the ground floor of the hotel.

5. UFO

UFO
James encounters a doppelgänger and is abducted by aliens.

In this whimsical ending, James is abducted by a UFO, adding a humorous twist to the game. This ending is also only available in New Game Plus mode.

How to unlock:

  • First, acquire the blue gem from a jeweler’s shop on Neely Street by breaking the window.
  • Use the gem at four locations: the rooftop of Saul’s apartment, the pier in Rosewater Park, another pier, and room 312 at the Lakeview Hotel.

6. Dog

Dog
Oh, that’s wild! So a dog is responsible for all the chaos in Silent Hill 2!

In this comical ending, James discovers a Shiba Inu controlling the events of Silent Hill from a command center. Like the UFO ending, this is only unlocked in New Game Plus mode.

How to unlock:

  • Combine two pieces of a key to unlock the observation room at the hotel.
    1. The first key piece is near Big Jay’s animal shelter in South Vale.
    2. The second piece is in a doghouse behind a wooden gate with a dog symbol on Katz Street.

7. Bliss (New Ending)

Bliss (New Ending)
End well, all is good? The new remake’s ending could hardly be more positive. Or could it?

This new ending shows James watching a videotape where he and a healthy Mary leave the hotel together, though it is implied to be a hallucination caused by a drug James has taken. Available only in New Game Plus mode.

How to unlock:

  • Take the drug White Claudia found in room 312 at the hotel.
  • To get the vial of White Claudia, follow these steps:
    1. Go to Pete’s Bowl-o-Rama in South Vale and open the safe using the code “1887” to obtain a key.
    2. Use the key to open a box in the hospital’s garden pavilion to find the vial.

8. Stillness (New Ending)

Stillness (New Ending)
To unlock the “Silent” ending, you must first experience the “In the Water” ending.

A new ending that mirrors the “In the Water” conclusion, with James once again preparing to end his life. This time, Mary speaks to him from the back seat of the car. Available in New Game Plus mode after achieving the “In the Water” ending.

How to unlock:

  • Acquire the chainsaw early in the game, found stuck in a tree trunk near the ranch.
  • Use the chainsaw to break the window of a green car at the Wiltse Road/Nathan Avenue intersection and retrieve a key.
  • Use the key to access the hotel’s manager’s office.
  • Unlock the safe using the combination “314” to get a postcard.
  • Complete the rest of the game as usual.

While every ending provides a different resolution to James’s story, fans often debate which is the true conclusion. Let us know in the comments which ending you think fits best with James and Mary’s tragic tale!
